New Year Tweaking

A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. ~Author Unknown

I don't usually make resolutions except one's as a kind of a joke. For instance, two years ago I made a resolution to never run out of French Vanilla creamer the whole year. Funny I actually kept this one.

This year I am going to make one because we are moving in June and I need to start clearing out some of my stuff. By stuff I mean books. Of course I wouldn't think of donating a book I haven't already read so I have decided to try to make a dent in my to be read pile. We are talking about 200 books here. Okay more like a library, not a pile. So my resolution is going to be not to buy any books or magazines for the year 2010. Sorry Amazon. This does not exempt me from borrowing books, or reading magazines at the library. This resolution is going to be one hard one to try to keep because I seriously believe the hunt is almost as much fun as the score in the book buying department for me. My daughter suggests that in the event of a total meltdown I could purchase a Kindle book, which isn't really a book, but we all know that's kind of stretch. Anyway wish me luck. What is everyone else going to give up for the new year?

Try your local library for Lauraine Snelling's books - I've been pretty successful finding them in most states we've lived in.

I'm giving up unnecessary spending - I am determined that this year is the one I get a handle on my budget. I have great budgeting skills but somewhere between what's on paper and what actually gets spent, something goes drastically wrong!!

Happy New Year!

Good luck. From your blog I have picked up how much you love books. I can only imagine how hard it is going to be to pass up buying books.

Where is your family moving? Are you going to be sad to leave HI?

Wishing you luck! I agree, book shopping is almost as good as reading a great book. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Happy New Years!

Yes, prices are high here too. We have the commissary so that helps with groceries but even going to a movie (for three people) is becoming a luxury.

Are you thinking of a tearoom? I know of a couple in this area - both are attached to British Food shops so it's sort of a little imported grocery store with a few tables where you can enjoy a pot of tea and some sandwiches or scones and cakes. A fun thing to look for is a church or community organization that is holding a Mother Daughter tea party.

As for books set in England, have you read anything by James Herriot? Also look for Gervase Phinn; he is a school inspector in the Yorkshire Dales and his adventures are really hilarious, not to mention the beautiful Dales scenery he writes about.

I love digital scrapbooking. I use Creative Memories Storybook Creator software and it is so simple to use. I have found it to be a little more expensive than traditional scrapbooking, probably because I tend to use lots of pictures and turn my journal entries into mini-novels and that means more pages - once you get to a certain number of pages, you have to start paying by the page and that adds up. I love the convenience of it - as long as I have my laptop, I can whip out a few pages wherever I am and whenever I have a few minutes. I started 2009 digitally scrapbooking pages every time I downloaded pictures from my camera but I got behind (a bit like getting off budget!), so now I have some catching up to do. I really enjoyed traditional scrapbooking but it is very time-consuming and I have so many albums to work on, I'll never get caught up that way.

LOL funny I just made a post about resolutions too and I'm making NONE. LOL

As for the books, good luck, I've tried to do the same thing but I'm terribly addicted to reading and I never stick to the "no buy" rule.

gadgets and apps

So many cool things for the older generation...not that I am that old yet....but can they please get names that don't make the older pee...
