Getting ready for school

It's soon time for the kids to go back to school. They will go back by Sept. 7. They are used to Hawaii school's that have a year round modified approach so this has been the longest break they have had. They are ready to begin the year. I can't believe all the school supplies we have needed and all the physicals for sports. It's just crazy but slowly we are getting things done. I am looking forward to our lives back in Hawaii where it seems the year runs more smoothly with frequent breaks every 3 months. This schedule I just can't get used too. How about you all. What is your school year like? How about supplies, do you need many?

School starts for Sophia on Wednesday, August 31. I saw a lot of people buying school supplies at Target the other day and they all seemed to have copious lists! It's a lot simpler for high school, although simpler doesn't necessary mean less expensive but most of the expense is at the beginning of the four years. Sophia had to have a scientific calculator and a thumb drive, as well as binders for each subject and book covers. Her binders are a bit thrashed from freshman and sophomore years so I picked up new ones. Binder, 5 tab dividers, three-hole-punched ruler, and a bit plastic pocket for $3, plus there were six colors to choose from so that's nice (binders from Target, their brand). We have lots of pencils, pens and erasers knocking around the house so we're good to go there. She's taking a Culinary class (we used to call it Home Ec) this year so I'm not sure if anything will be required for that class. The problem with high school is that they don't put out a supplies list ahead of time; you have to wait until school starts and then there will be a list...hope it's a short one!

There's also the outlay for dues and association fees - the parent-teacher organization and the athletic boosters - probably $30-35 each and then there is an outlay every time you go to a chorus concert or sports game - it's everyone's chance to do some fundraiser so take your wallet!

gadgets and apps

So many cool things for the older generation...not that I am that old yet....but can they please get names that don't make the older pee...
